Raw May 20th 2013: Recap & Results

This week’s Raw saw the emergence of Paul Heyman’s newest client, Curtis Axel. Also, during the main event of Raw the battle wounds from Triple H’s battle against Brock Lesnar just 24 hours earlier came back to haunt him. See the full results from last night’s edition of Monday Night Raw





Raw kicked off with an ambulance making it’s way to the arena and parking next to the titantron stage. When the ambulance siren silenced, Ryback’s music hit and he walked out from the back of the ambulance as we are then shown still frames from the closing moments of the Last Man Standing Match between John Cena and Ryback at Extreme Rules.

Ryback cuts a promo from the top of the ambulance stating that the Last Man Standing Match did not see a winner and John Cena had to be carried out of the arena on a stretcher. Ryback then questions the crowd why they cheer for John Cena and says that they will all end up in the hospital or the morgue along with John Cena next month at WWE’s new PPV, Payback. Ryback then challenges John Cena to an Ambulance Match for WWE Payback in Chicago next month.


It’s announced that Paul Heyman will reveal his newest client later on during the show. Next up is Chris Jericho and The Miz vs. Wade Barrett and Fandango in tag team action.


Chris Jericho and The Miz vs. Wade Barrett and Fandango:

The Middle of this match takes an odd turn as Fandango hops off of the ring apron and starts to ignore the match while dancing in front of the announce table with Summer Rae while his music plays. The Miz and Jericho take advantage and hit their finishers on Wade Barrett to pick up the win.

Winners: The Miz and Chris Jericho


Later during the broadcast we will see a recap of the Cage Match between Brock Lesnar and Triple H. Also, the reveal of the latest “Paul Heyman Guy.” We go to commercial.


We come back from commercial with Vickie Guerrero announcing that Jack Swagger will compete in a match against either The Great Khali, R-Truth, or Randy Orton. His opponent will be decided via the WWE App by user votes later in the night.

We’re taken backstage where Kane and Daniel Bryan talk about their loss to the Shield at Extreme Rules. Bryan is furious and thinks that people are calling him the weak link in Team Hell No. Kane tries to lighten the mood with a couple of jokes, but Bryan is not in the mood and is further angered. Kofi Kingston comes in and tries to refocus the team on their six man tag match against the Shield later tonight. Bryan says he’ll see Kofi and Kane in the ring and walks out.


We go back to the ring where Sheamus makes his entrance for the next match as we go to commercial break.

Sheamus vs. Titus O’Neil:

Titus O’Neil had made some challenging remarks towards Sheamus during the Extreme Rules Post-Show questioning Sheamus’s toughness; prompting tonight’s match. Titus takes the fight in an impressive showing against the Celtic Warrior; however, Sheamus gets the upper-hand and picks up the pinfall victory via a Brogue Kick.

Winner: Sheamus


Up Next: Paul Heyman will reveal his newest client to the WWE Universe.

We come back from commercial with the introduction of Paul Heyman. Heyman says that he is always boo’d for his clients’ actions and tells the crowd to go ahead and keep booing him. He boasts about the fact that Brock Lesnar defeated Triple H in their Cage Match at Extreme Rules and that nothing can change that. He then calls Triple H a loser and that Brock Lesnar has fulfilled his obligations to the WWE and is at home enjoying life while Triple H has to tuck his sledgehammer between his legs and go home to mommy. Heyman says that it’s time to make history and introduce something new to the WWE and provide a moment that everyone will look back on in 10 years as an amazing moment.

Heyman then introduces his newest client, Micheal McGillicutty, with the new name, Curtis Axel. Heyman says that Axel wants to create his own legacy while acknowledging the legacy of his Father “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig and his Grandfather Larry “The Ax” Hennig. Triple H comes out to interrupt Curtis Axel’s debut and challenges him to a match tonight.


We come back from commercial to our next match:

Alberto Del Rio vs. Big E. Langston: 

The match starts out quick as Del Rio looks to lock in the Cross-Armbreaker. Langston powers out and the match goes back and forth until finally AJ serves a distraction while Big E. pokes Del Rio in the eye and then delivers the Big Ending for the pinfall victory.

Winner: Big E. Langston

Still to come: The Shield vs. Team Hell No and Kofi Kingston and Triple H vs. Curtis Axel. We go to commercial.

We come back from the commercial break for our next match:

AJ Lee vs. Layla

We’re shown footage from Extreme Rules where AJ and Kaitlyn have some choice words for each other followed by a brawl backstage. These two divas trade off control back and forth as AJ was able to hit a couple of neckbreakers early in the match. Layla responds with a few drop kicks and some strikes in the corner. Layla goes for a sideslam that is countered with the Black Widow submission hold by AJ for the submission victory. This was yet another short Diva’s match that wasn’t given much time, but was able to get it’s purpose and point across.

Winner: AJ Lee

After the match AJ straddles Layla and blows her a kiss before throwing her head back down to the mat.

Cody Rhodes vs. Zack Ryder: 

We come back from commercial with Cody and Ryder already battling in the ring. Ryder looks to hit a move from the second rope but Cody ducks. Ryder hits a dropkick and manages to gather some more offense. Cody counters Ryder and stomps him down in the corner. Cody with a slam for a 2 count. Cody begins to work on the arm. Ryder comes back and hits his usual moves. Ryder nails the big right hand in the corner and then the Broski Boot. Ryder covers for a 2 count. More back and forth. Cody hits a Disaster Kick for the win.

Winner: Cody Rhodes

After the conclusion to the match Ryback’s music hits and out comes the beast. Cody Rhodes leaves the ring while Ryder is still down from the Disaster Kick. Ryback taunts Ryder to get up and then hits the meat-hook clothesline followed by a big Powerbomb and then tops it off with Shellshock. Ryback then takes Ryder out of the ring and carries him up towards the ambulance and then throws  him in the back as the siren sounds and drives away with Ryder aboard.


Up Next: The Shield take on Team Hell No and Kofi Kingston. We go to commercial break.


We come back from the commercial break with the introduction of the Shield as they make their way through the crowd now with Dean Ambrose walking down one isle with the United State Championship and Rollins and Reigns coming down the other with the Tag Team Championships. The Shield cut a promo before the match. Ambrose says that the Shield have brought power back to these Championships. He also says that the Shield is responsible for the Rock’s injury and for losing the WWE Championship. He states that thanks to the Shield the Undertaker will never be seen again. Ambrose goes on to say that the Shield beat Ryback down so bad that they forced him to snap and turn on John Cena.


The Shield vs. Team Hell No and Kofi Kingston: 

This was a pretty solid tag team match that saw the Shield play their numbers game strategy to perfection again as they spent most of the match singling out Daniel Bryan and isolating him to their corner. A few hot tags were made to Kane where Team Hell No and Kofi took back control. The match eventually breaks out and all six men begin flying around the ring. Dean Ambrose takes Daniel Bryan out with a suplex on the floor while Seth Rollins rams Kofi’s head into the steal post on the other side of the ring to take him out. Ambrose then breaks up a Chokeslam attempt by Kane but ends up getting an upper-cut sending him out of the ring. Kane attempts another Chokeslam on Reigns but Rollins surprises The Big Red Monster with a flying knee of the top rope. Reigns follows through with a big Spear to Kane and picks up the pinfall.

Winners: The Shield


We get a recap of the introduction of Curtis Axel from Paul Heyman which lead to a confrontation with Triple H earlier in the evening. Triple H is backstage getting ready for the match when a trainer comes in advising Triple H that the doctors say he’s not medically cleared to fight tonight. Triple H then says that if the doctor likes his job then he’ll allow him to compete tonight.

We come back from commercial backstage where Kaitlyn is discussing her secret admirer with Natalya. Kaitlyn says she’s been receiving texts from her admirer and they see Cody Rhodes pass by on texting on his phone. They grab his phone to find that it wasn’t Cody. Kaitlyn says she’s glad it wasn’t him.


Jack Swagger vs. Randy Orton: 

It is revealed through the WWE App voting pole that Randy Orton will be Swagger’s opponent. The two get a considerable amount of time and Jack Swagger takes control for a good portion of the match and works over Orton’s leg. Orton fights back and evens things out. Orton hits a big superplex towards the end of the match and then hits Swagger with stomps and upper-cuts. Swagger comes back with a side belly-to-belly suplex for a 2 count. He goes for the Swagger bomb in the corner but Orton counters with a kick to the gut. Orton goes for the second rope DDT but Swagger counters and attempts the Patriot lock. Orton counters out and hits Swagger with the second rope DDT. Orton goes for the RKO but it’s blocked and Swagger locks in the Patriot Lock. Orton tries to roll through but Swagger hangs on to the hold. Randy gets to the ropes and kicks Swagger out of the ring. Swagger comes back in the ring and Orton hit’s the RKO “Outta Nowhere” for the win.

Winner: Randy Orton


We get a recap of Ryback challenging and setting up the Ambulance Match for Payback against John Cena. Still to come: Triple H vs. Curtis Axel. We go to commercial.


We come back from the commercial with Triple H coming out for tonight’s main event match.

Triple H vs. Curtis Axel: 

Triple H gets the upper hand early on as he delivers some big blows to Axel. Axel fights back with some shots to the head of the game who starts to show signs of his possible concussion from his bout with Brock Lesnar. Axel hits a big dropkick to the head of Triple H as well as an elbow in the corner. Triple H comes back with a spinebuster and throws Axel out of the ring. Triple H tries to shake off his injury as he makes his way out of the ring. Axel delivers a few more shots to the head before Triple H counters with a clothesline. Triple H throws Axel back in the ring but has a hard time getting back in himself. Triple H then walks over to the doctor at ringside and sits down in a chair asking for water. Doctors then tend to Triple H and deem him unable to continue the match. Triple H stumbles around and gives a blank stare to those around him as we go to black.

Winner: Curtis Axel
